Old North State Barbecue Series

The mission of the Old North State BBQ Series (Series) is to promote barbecue excellence, and encourage competitive team spirit while enhancing tourism as an economic development initiative in North Carolina. The 5th Annual intrastate BBQ Championship series gets started in April 2017! New events are being added this year. The full Series schedule is below.

The Series is eligible to all KCBS sanctioned BBQ competition events across North Carolina. Events needed to apply to be part of the Series before February 15th.  We had eleven events want to participate in 2017 (the most in Series history). Championship BBQ teams competing in the events work to accumulate points to earn the honor of being called the Old North State Series Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion (1st Runner-Up).

To be eligible for the Series Championship, teams must compete in a certain number of events. Team scoring for the Series is based on their official KCBS score. Teams are NOT awarded points based on what position they finish, so this avoids teams “cherry picking” smaller events.

2017 Schedule:
April 15: 21st Annual Fire House BBQ Cook-off, Kings Mountain - Completed
April 29: Uptown Lexington BBQ Capital Cook-off, Lexington - Completed

Championship points are based on the number of events in the Series each year (2017 - 11 events):
o    Five-Six Events: Highest three (3) cumulative overall scores used in calculating Champion.
o    Seven - Nine Events: Highest four (4) cumulative overall scores used.
o    Ten – Twelve Events: Highest five (5) cumulative overall scores used.
o    Thirteen+ : Highest seven (7) cumulative overall scores used.

Grand Champion: $2,000

Reserve Grand: $1,500

3rd Place: $1,000

4th Place: $500

5th Place: $500

There is NO fee to enter. We understand prior commitments or unexpected emergencies may prevent teams from participating in all events, so while participation in all events is advantageous and strongly encouraged, it is NOT required. The team with the highest cumulative overall points from the required events will be crowned the Old North State Series Grand Champion.  If you do not compete in an event, your team score will be considered "0".

The Old North State Series Scoring:

·        Based on KCBS scoring from each event.

·        Team with the highest overall score wins Grand Champion.

·        Team with second highest overall score wins Reserve Grand Champion

Tiebreaker: The lowest event overall score will be used as the tiebreaker. In essence, whoever has the highest overall score that was "dropped" will win the tiebreaker.

Winners are announced at the last Series event. Prize money is mailed the week after.
